What is sashiko stitching?

Sashiko (刺し子, 'little stabs') is a traditional Japanese hand-stitching technique using a simple running stitch in geometric patterns. Originally used to reinforce and patch worn fabric, it's now a popular visible mending and decorative technique.

What grid spacing should I use?

Traditional sashiko spacing is 4–6 mm. Smaller spacing (3 mm) gives a denser, more delicate pattern; larger spacing (8–10 mm) is faster to stitch and more decorative.

What thread should I use for sashiko?

Authentic sashiko thread (sashiko ito) is a tightly twisted cotton thread that lies flat. As a substitute, use 6 strands of standard embroidery floss (like DMC) without separating them, or perle cotton size 8.

Can I use this for visible mending on jeans?

Yes. Sashiko is the classic technique for mending denim. Use a sturdy cotton thread in a contrasting color (white, gold, or red on indigo denim) and stitch through both the patch fabric and the garment to secure them.

Do I need an embroidery machine?

How to stitch

Print the PDF at 100% scale (no fit-to-page). Verify the 50 mm scale bar measures 50 mm exactly.
Transfer the dots and lines to fabric using carbon paper, a water-soluble pen, or basting.
Use a sashiko or sturdy embroidery needle and sashiko thread (sashiko ito) or 6-strand cotton floss.
Stitch each line as evenly spaced running stitches at the marked grid spacing.
Keep tension loose enough that the fabric lies flat — sashiko should not pucker.
For mending: place a patch behind the worn area before stitching to reinforce.
